In 2011, the Czech Republic reported 2 044 (1 086 in men, 958 in women) new cases of malignant melanoma (the diagnosis code according to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision is C43) and 433 (179 in men, 254 in women) cases of melanoma in situ (code D03). In the same year 365 inhabitants of the Czech Republic died from the diagnosis of malignant melanoma. The incidence of C43 grew nearly four times since 1980 (when there were 565 reported cases). The source of data on the incidence of oncological diseases is the Czech National Cancer Registry. The European Melanoma Day will be held on the 12th May. Its purpose is to raise awareness of this malignant disease, which is one of the most common tumours in the Czech Republic (9th most frequently diagnosed tumour in 2011).
